OGC Testbed 13 dedicated to Quality of Data

Testbed 13 is the name of the current OGC compatibility program initiative, which has been kicked-off last week during the meeting organized by OGC and held at USGS in Reston near Washington DC. m-click.aero participates in testbed 13 working on the topic dedicated to aeronautical data quality of service.

This year’s Testbed lacks one of the major sponsors from the aviation domain, so the aviation thread only counts four engineering reports dedicated to aviation topics. Three of them are related to the quality of aeronautical data (requirements and specification, formal model and service implementation). The fourth ER deals with the semantic description of geospatial service characteristics.

Having said that, this year m-click.aero was awarded to be the main editor of an engineering report dedicated to architecture, design and development of a common purpose data quality assessment service (DQOS). Such service is planned to be used as intermediary component utilized to assess the overall quality of data, which an observed service instance claims to be capable to provide.

m-click.aero has lots of experiences with aeronautical data validation. On behalf of Eurocontrol and FAA we were working on different aspects of aeronautical data quality and were exploring the way of how to specify the data validation rules and enforce them in the aviation domain. Our award winning aviation data validation platform was developed and put in operational use as outcome of those activities as one of the first aviation data analysis services available on the web. This year however, the focus was set to a more general approach and broader meaning of data quality. Having said that, the theoretical work will be conducted by engineering reports dedicated to the quality of data requirements specification and assessment model, while our report will deal with the implementation part.

We are looking forward for the fruitful, successful collaboration with testbed’s participants, sponsors from FAA and the OGC staff.

m-click.aero GmbH and HFC Human-Factors-Consult GmbH will cooperate in order to provide state of the art situational awareness services for aeronautical traffic management in multiple airport control.

The companies will team up to combine m-click.aero’s expertise in the area of SWIM enabled aeronautical data integration, processing and delivery with HFC’s unique multi-airport control assistance MasterMAN®. With MasterMAN® HFC develops an innovative strategy and optimization tool, which supports air traffic and staff planning in multi-airport control operations. m-click.aero will provide the respective data integration and processing.

This collaboration comes at a crucial time considering that already in 2015 the Swedish ANSP LFV is the first worldwide who perform Remote Tower Services. With the extension of LFV’s Remote Tower Center in February 2017, LFV can remotely control three additional airports from Sundsvall. During this spring, two airports will be connected and remotely controlled from Sundsvall.

The German air navigation service provider DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung equip Saarbrücken Airport with a remote tower solution. The go-live is planned for 2017, with the airports in Erfurt and Dresden to follow. All three airports will be operated remotely from a remote tower center located at Leipzig Tower. Main goal of DFS is to centralize multiple tower operations in this single remote tower center and to maximize the efficient use of the tower controllers.

In Europe alone, there are more than 240 small and regional airports with a traffic density between 100.000 and 2.000.000 passengers per year. This level of traffic density is appropriate for remote control operation and promises the largest efficiency benefits when applying Multi-Airport control.

To control several airports remotely by only one air traffic controller is the next step of development and becomes more and more apparent.

m-click’s Aeronautical Data Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) solution integrates aviation data seamlessly across applications, processes and systems, quickly and cost-effectively – on premise, in the cloud and between aviation stakeholders. It supports open standards such as OGC and SWIM and therefore the interoperability between aviation formats and standards.

Consolidated aviation data provided by m-click.aero help out to to monitor the aviation traffic management process, providing a comprehensive data basis for collaborative decision making and improving situational awareness in the congested Europa’s airspace.

m-click.aero was awarded to showcase the Aeronautical Data Validation Platform at the SESAR SWIM Global Demo in Rome that takes place on 08. and 09. June 2016 at the ENAV Prototype Systems Center – Rome ACC.

In this showcase we will demonstrate how the possible differences in the quality of data might be identified and managed when data is exchanged globally between regional SWIM domains with different quality standards. The validation covers XML schema issues, business rules violations and geographical inaccuracy.

The platform is best described as one-stop-shop for aeronautical data quality assurance. It allows for an unlimited amount of validation rules to be quickly applied in a single step on the incoming or outgoing data and offers real benefits for service consumers and providers involved in the collaboration via SWIM.

  • Syntactic schema validation in accordance with AIRM, ISRM
  • Validation based on a wide range of XML schemas from the aviation domain.
  • This includes all common versions of AIXM 5.1, FIXM, IWXXM, AFX, AMXM
  • Common AIXM 5.1 extensions from EUROCONTROL and FAA
  • Additional container formats like OGC WFS and WPS, SOAP, NM B2B etc.
  • Semantic validation based on SBVR and Schematron business rules
  • Geographic and Spatial Business Rules using custom and ISO geometry functions

m-click.aero is pleased to announce that Aleksandar Balaban joined our team of Aeronautical Experts as an Aviation Consultant. Aleks will provide consulting activities to our customers with advanced knowledge of ATM processes and AIM concepts. With his strong background in the Aviation industry including SESAR and SWIM projects he supports our research activities in OGC Testbed 11.

Aleksandar has been working in the field of civil aviation / aeronautical information systems for almost 7 years. He started his aviation career at Austrian company Frequentis AG. First three years in ATM business he was working on the design and development of aeronautical information systems, especially the European Aeronautical database (EAD), which has been maintaining and continuously developing by Frequentis AG on behalf of Eurocontrol. His experience ranges from software and data engineering to ATM systems definition and implementation utilizing the concept of system wide information management.

In September 2011 he joined the team participating in Europe’s most ambitious research and development programme, SESAR. He was working as contributor and task leader in work packages 8, 13 and 14, which deal with system wide information management (SWIM), aeronautical service and data modelling of digital NOTAM and digital briefing applications for the future European integrated ATM. He was also participating in the ongoing work on the OGC PubSub 1.0 project.

SESAR logom-click presents the WFS Temporality Extension at the SWIM Master Class 2014 “Best in Class Ceremony and Exhibition” at EUROCONTROL Headquarters, Brussels.

We presented our SWIM Master Class submission, that is entitled “Distributing Aviation Data using a Temporality-Enabled WFS (WFS-TE)”, to the interested audience. We demonstrated how aviation data repositories, loaded with a huge amount of data from all last year’s AIRACs, are now directly accessible in the spatial and temporal dimension with a single ad hoc WFS request. This is now possible, using the new developed “Temporality-Enabled” OGC compliant AIXM Web Feature Service (WFS-TE).
